Distribution Designer
We are seeking a skilled Distribution Designer responsible for independently developing design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems for electric utility customers. The primary focus will be on overhead systems. The role includes reviewing client-provided work, assessing scope requirements, and potentially conducting fieldwork to gather necessary site information.
Responsibilities- Develop design and construction work packages for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
- Review and assess work provided by clients to determine scope requirements.
- Conduct fieldwork, including taking photos and measurements, to gather site-specific information.
- Utilize Open Utilities design software to complete power distribution designs, including determining power requirements and equipment selection.
- Perform energy analysis to ensure material selections meet site usage requirements.
- Prepare a Bill of Materials (BOM) and enter it into SAP/Material Tracking Software.
- Assist with obtaining necessary permits for utility lines crossing roads, easements, and private properties.
- Submit completed electrical construction packages for approval and make revisions as needed.
- Communicate frequently via email, phone, and Teams with clients.
- Collaborate with Quality Control approvers to finalize design packages.
- Experience with power distribution design and creating Bills of Materials.
- Proficiency in industry-specific design software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Catia, Microstation, and Open Utilities.
- Knowledge of NESC codes and ability to apply them in design and material selection.
- Ability to perform structural analysis using software like Poleforman or PLA/Pole Loading Analysis.
- Strong communication skills for client interactions.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or an entry-level design degree with an associate's in design.
- Experience or coursework related to the utility industry or power grid.
- Internships or co-ops with major utility companies are advantageous.
- Experience in Quality Control or Quality Assurance work.
- Experience in training new employees or writing process standards.
The work environment offers a blend of fieldwork, office, and remote work flexibility. Fieldwork will occur in designated locations, ideally within a 60-mile radius of areas such as Grand Rapids and Flint MI. Initial training may require travel to the office for remote workers, after which remote work is fully supported. This role is part of a rapidly growing department connected to the Utility Energy Division, offering opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $29.00/hr.
