What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a R&D Aerospace Engineer to join our team! As a guidance and control engineer in the Flight Systems and Software department you will work with a multi‑disciplinary team to create autonomous navigation, guidance, pointing, and control solutions for a variety of aerospace platforms.
- Design and analyze guidance algorithms for aerospace vehicles
- Design and analyze control algorithms for use in an autopilot
- Design and analyze control algorithms for subsystems such as actuators, cold gas thrusters, and gimbals
- Create or use system and subsystem models to simulate guidance and control algorithm performance within the platform for a variety of missions
- Utilize software‑in‑the‑loop and hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulations to evaluate guidance and/or autopilot performance
- Participate in ground testing of the aerospace platform, its subsystems, or components
- Interface with firmware and software engineers to implement guidance and control algorithms for a particular mission
- Interface with aerospace, mechanical, and electrical engineers on vehicle design constraints as they related to guidance and control
Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range$102,400 - $199,700
* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance.
The ideal R&D Aerospace Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Experience in applied aerodynamics, flight mechanics, or trajectory simulation with application to the design, modeling, simulation, optimization, and analysis of aerospace flight systems.
- Experience with the capabilities, use, and application of MATLAB®, Simulink®, Python, C/C++, or other modern programming languages and repositories in technical analysis/computing and software development.
- Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast‑paced/schedule driven environment.
- Experience with the guidance and control of hypersonic flight systems
- Experience with pointing and control of gimbals and/or space systems
- Experience with classical control, optimal control, nonlinear control, and robust control theory
