What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking a R&D Computer Scientist to joing our team! You will participate in a large, multi‑disciplinary team of experts creating navigation, guidance, and control flight software for hypersonic, space, and nuclear deterrence applications. On any given day you may be asked to:
- Create or modify flight code for communication, timing, sequencing, algorithm implementation, or telemetry
- Create or modify support software for launch support equipment and safety systems
- Test and debug interfaces between the flight computer and other avionics components
- Create or modify telemetry visualization screens and analysis scripts
- Create scripts to automate testing and/or analysis
- Assist with the integration of software into high‑fidelity simulations to assess algorithms and software performance
Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range$102,400 - $199,700
* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance
The ideal R&D S&E Computer Scientist candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Experience using C++ or Rust on a variety of projects
- Experience creating real‑time software for embedded processors
- Experience with real‑time operating systems
- Experience with Java and scripting languages
- Experience with Git Hub, Teamforge, or similar
- Experience using MATLAB Simulink
- Experience with aerospace systems
The Flight Systems and Software Department creates navigation, guidance, pointing, and control algorithms and software for various flight systems, including hypersonic, nuclear deterrence, and space applications. We have experience in real‑time flight software engineering, post‑processing trajectory reconstruction, signal processing, simulation development, and analysis of testing results for a wide variety of navigational sensors and test modalities. 5323 owns two labs where benchtop, software‑in‑the‑loop, and hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing of flight software may be accomplished.
