What Your Job Will Be LikeSandia National Laboratories is seeking an experienced Building Automation Systems Controls Designer to join the In-House Design Team! This team provides Sandia with the internal capability to self‑execute design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico. We are looking for a detail orientated, teaming individual to support a dynamic group of Architects and Engineers in the development, design, and construction of building and infrastructure projects!
- Design and create automated control systems for Facilities building mechanical systems.
- Use CAD type software packages to create and modify construction drawings.
- Create and modify operational sequences and controls schematics for building mechanical equipment.
- Read and interpret construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and contracts.
- Interpret and apply latest applicable American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air‑Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards to the design of building control systems.
- Visit construction sites to perform field inspections of controls and mechanical system installations.
- Work closely with the Design Manager, and Operations Manager to review controls contractor submittals
- Coordinate projects to meet delivery dates.
- Communicate with Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), designers, contractors, and other trades.
- Coordinate with team members for listing of required materials.
- Actively participate in predesign and review meetings.
- Identify opportunities for cost‑saving and energy savings measures and quality improvement in HVAC design
- Adhere to company safety policies and procedures to ensure all duties are performed in a safe and professional manner.
The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Salary Range$63,800 - $123,400
* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- High school diploma, plus five (5) or more years experience with HVAC Controls and designing building automation control systems, or equivalent combination of education and experience. May have secondary education.
- Experience in one or more of the following:
- Computer Aided Drafting Software (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit and/ or BAC Software).
- Must have a strong mechanical background and understanding of mechanical systems
- Must have the knowledge to create or have a clear understanding of the following for every design package:
- Sequence of Operations
- Nameplate schedule that takes equipment to be tied into FCS (BAS) in order to assign a standard Sandia control point name
- Ability to create Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P & ) schematic drawings.
- Ability to review and provide a special spec (project specific spec) for each project derived from a Master Standard SNL Spec.
- Ability to review the controls contractors detailed bid & construction submittal against SNL's FCS requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE L-Level security clearance.
- Ability to understand and put together a control's equipment schedule.
