Sr. to Staff Mechanical Engineer - Delivery Drone Airframe Structures
San Francisco, CA (you can work from home up to 2x/week)
The team builds small, lightweight autonomous delivery drones with safety‑first hardware designed to operate around people and everyday urban infrastructure. The work has a positive impact on the sustainability, access, and cost of everyday necessities.
You would be joining an elite group of about 60 people and 20 engineers inside a much larger public company. This org operates as a small, fast‑moving hardware innovation lab: minimal bureaucracy, real build/test cycles, and ownership of systems that ship and operate at a very large scale.
The company is targeting a salary range of $200-250k (more is possible for principal level candidates), plus RSUs translating into total first year compensation of roughly $300-500k.
Job Responsibilities:- Designing and developing lightweight primary and secondary structural assemblies for UAV airframes, including integrated metal and composite structures.
- Owning structural components from concept through validation, encompassing CAD modeling, analysis, prototyping, and test‑driven refinement.
- Collaborating with systems engineering to defining and refining structural requirements, interfaces, and architectural constraints.
- Working with test teams to planning and executing structural validation and reliability testing.
- Performing finite element analysis and mass optimization to achieving aggressive weight, strength, and performance targets.
- Ensuring structural designs are robust, manufacturable, and compatible with assembly and integration constraints.
- Investigating structural failures and driving corrective redesign through hands‑on testing and iteration.
- A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering.
- Professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer for an automotive, UAV, aerospace, or high‑performance product.
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD and surfacing of complex assemblies.
- Experience performing FEA and validating lightweight structures.
- Demonstrated success designing mass‑efficient structural components.
- Working knowledge of metallic and composite structural systems.
- Hands‑on experience with prototyping, 3D printing, and fixture design.
- Strong understanding of manufacturability and fabrication methods.
- Comfortable in a fast‑paced, prototype‑centric environment.
