What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Power Electronics and Energy Conversion Systems Department is rapidly growing our research capabilities, and we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic team of professionals.

We are seeking an independent and highly motivated individual to perform high-impact research on the characterization and modeling of active (wide bandgap semiconductors) and passive (magnetics and dielectric) power electronics components. Our team develops new modular hardware architectures and intelligent control strategies for high-performance, medium voltage, power conversion systems. You will be responsible for supporting existing research projects and contributing to the development of new projects and proposals focused on power conversion systems for utility-scale energy storage applications.

On

any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Model SiC and GaN devices and integrate them with advanced modular power electronics topologies.
  • Design and build power modules using our new heterogeneous integration lab.
  • Conduct experiments using state-of-the-art characterization instrumentation.
  • Assess components long term reliability and conduct failure analysis.
  • Collaborate with the power electronics systems design team to optimize the utilization of advanced devices.
  • Present research progress at group meetings, peer review events, and technical conferences.
  • Develop innovative solutions for utility-scale storage applications as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
  • PhD in Material Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant, related field.
  • Proven record of technical accomplishment and strong written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
  • Proficiency in LT Spice, COMSOL, and ANSYS for modeling and simulation tasks.
  • Experience with electrical characterization systems, spectroscopy, and multi-probe characterization techniques.
  • Experience with long-term reliability characterization and data analysis, and failure analysis.
  • Experience in PCB design for power electronics applications.
  • Familiarity with embedded system programming (if applicable to specific projects).
  • Experience with data analysis software such as MATLAB or Python for analyzing experimental data.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and contribute to group efforts.
About Our Team:

The Power Electronics and Energy Conversion Systems Department is focused on the development of advanced power electronics devices and components for grid-scale systems. The department's scope of work includes fundamental material science, converter design and modeling, power conversion control, and system performance analysis and optimization. The department works closely with several other groups in Materials Science, Energy Storage, Power Sources, Power Systems, Distributed and Renewable Generation Systems, and Advanced Modeling.

We also have active partnerships and collaborations with electric utilities, electrical equipment manufacturers, universities, and other national laboratories to enable the development and rapid integration of energy storage technologies in electric infrastructure.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use,…
