OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking multiple Transportation Engineer 2 positions to join the Olympic Region Traffic Office. The role focuses on designing and overseeing signing, illumination, work zone traffic control, traffic signals, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to ensure highway construction projects are built in compliance with specifications, contract requirements, and approved plans.
What to Expect- Prepare design documentation, contract plans, special provisions, construction estimates, and field reviews for traffic engineering projects.
- Participate in project scoping by developing engineering estimates for programming purposes.
- Develop traffic engineering discipline design documentation to support project delivery.
- Create traffic discipline plans, estimates, special provisions, and design package materials needed for project advertisement and bidding.
- Design and support the maintenance of traffic signals, illumination, signing, and ITS.
- Prepare and review work zone traffic control plans to maximize safety and minimize impacts to system users.
- Produce engineering designs, specifications, and estimates using computer‑aided engineering software.
- Coordinate with internal region partners and external customers by preparing written correspondence and supporting collaboration efforts.
- Engineering fundamentals: basic knowledge of engineering and mathematical principles, typically gained through education or experience (EIT or LSIT). Ability to apply this knowledge to design, construction, and inspection tasks.
- Engineering knowledge: comprehensive understanding of transportation engineering principles, methods, and practices. Experience in design development, construction techniques, material testing, and/or contract administration. Experience preparing construction contract documents or working as a Design Builder in an engineering capacity.
- Analytical and technical review skills: examine and propose alternative solutions to complex project elements. Experience reviewing engineering plans and specifications for compliance.
- Technology proficiency: operating Windows‑based computers and MS Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Word, as well as databases and computer‑aided engineering software.
- Communication skills: communicate technical and non‑technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, using email, telephone, text, video conferencing, and collaboration tools.
- Collaboration & adaptability: work independently and as part of a team, prioritize workload, and complete multiple assignments accurately.
- Growth mindset and service orientation: demonstrate commitment to learning and meeting the needs of others.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate state‑owned vehicles.
- Physical requirements:
traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain; maneuver and transport materials or equipment weighing up to 35 pounds; stand for extended periods; work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Technical traffic engineering competency: prepare traffic signal, ITS, illumination, signing, and work zone traffic control plans and associated construction contract documents.
- Engineering software & plan development competency: experience developing contract plans using computer‑aided engineering and design software.
