Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are looking for a Consultant EnvCoW to support a range of projects across Scotland. The role will require you to monitor construction activities and their compliance with environmental legislation, planning conditions, method statements, and wider environmental protection measures.

The EnvCoW acts as the link between contractors, environmental professionals, and regulators to minimise environmental risk. It’s an exciting opportunity to help protect the environment, in real time, in active construction sites. This role can be based out of our Edinburgh or Glasgow offices, with a mix of site-based, office-based and home-based working, depending on project needs and personal preference.

You’ll play a key role in monitoring environmental compliance during construction, while also acting as a trusted advisor to clients and site teams. The role offers variety, autonomy and the opportunity to shape how environmental best practice is delivered on site.

Key duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Undertaking regular site inspections to monitor the efficacy of environmental protection measures
  • Supporting construction works to comply with ecological method statements, environmental management plans, and planning conditions
  • Advising site teams on protected species legislation and habitat protection
  • Overseeing and advising on the implementation of mitigation measures (e.g., fencing, buffer zones, pollution controls)
  • Monitor works in sensitive areas such as watercourses, woodlands, or protected habitats
  • Supervise works affecting protected species where required
  • Produce site visit reports with findings, actions, and recommendations
  • Maintain accurate records of environmental incidents and mitigation measures
  • Provide updates to clients, project managers, and regulators

The role includes the opportunity to share and participate actively in the management and ownership of the business through the Employee Ownership Trust, which places full ownership of the company with the employees.

The role is based in LUC’s offices in Edinburgh or Glasgow. We work in a hybrid model with people being in the office a minimum of two days per week. There will also be travel required to visit sites, client offices and other office locations.

A full-time role is based on 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday). However, LUC has a strong track record in flexible working, and we have been recognised for our flexible working culture, so we are happy to discuss a range of flexible working options for this role including part time hours (minimum 30 hours per week) if desired.

Experience and qualifications

The successful candidate will complement our existing enthusiastic and dedicated environmental professionals. You will share our commitment to high quality science and be motivated to grow your technical skills and knowledge.

  • Degree or equivalent in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field (often preferred)
  • Experience working on construction sites in an environmental or ecological role
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and planning compliance
  • Strong observational and reporting skills
  • Confident communicating with contractors and site teams
  • Ability to work independently and make practical decisions
  • Good understanding of health & safety on construction site
  • CSCS card
  • Combined Ecological and Environmental Clerk of Works experience
  • Water Quality Monitoring
  • 4x4 driver training

Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the UK.

Please apply by uploading your CV and covering letter via the above link
