About The Role
At Balfour Beatty, we are proud to be part of the delivery team for HS2, the UK’s flagship high‑speed rail programme and a once‑in‑a‑generation project shaping the future of sustainable transport and construction innovation.
We are currently seeking an experienced Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join our Regional Buildings team in Long Itchington to support the delivery of the N1/N2 project – a series of five reinforced concrete buildings that will house critical Mechanical & Electrical (MEP) plant infrastructure along the route. These highly engineered structures are essential to HS2’s operational systems and represent a unique blend of heavy civil engineering and complex building construction.
The project spans from Birmingham to Leamington Spa, and a company car is provided. Upon completion, you will have the opportunity to progress onto other exciting projects across our regional buildings portfolio.
What you’ll be doingThe HSW Advisor will support the project to drive HSW performance. They will ensure efficient and effective advice and support to meet (and where possible) exceed operational requirements. The HSW Advisor will support the Head of HSW and Senior HSW Advisor to enable the project to achieve our Zero Harm objectives.
Responsibilities- Fully understand and support delivery of UK HSW Strategy.
- Contribute to the implementation, delivery and review of the BU Zero Harm Action Plan and Sustainability Action plan at business and/or project level.
- Support the delivery of the HSW Key Performance Indicators at project & business level.
- Support win teams with quality & innovative HSW responses for bids, proposals and PQQs.
- Provide expert support to investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and company requirements.
- In conjunction with operational management complete a local and bespoke risk‑based Service Level Agreement with each project which is kept under quarterly review.
- Undertake regular site inspections as per project risk matrix.
- Produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record planned & unplanned HSW inspections which review project performance against the UK HSW Regulatory Framework & UK Business Management System requirements.
- Undertake regular checks on Health and Safety Risk Management ensuring that appropriate risks and opportunities have been identified and are being implemented.
- Relevant H&S Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification). May consider candidates with a certificate/qualification currently working towards one of these qualifications with relevant on‑site experience.
- To have or be working toward Chartered Membership of IOSH.
- Ability to influence and promote a positive HSW culture.
- Competence in incident investigation.
- Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework.
- Ability to prepare formal written reports on HSW topics.
- Ability to undertake project planning and project management.
- Demonstrates commitment to continual learning to refine, further develop and apply expertise to add distinctive value to customers and Balfour Beatty.
- Broad experience of complex construction and civils project (or experience from an equivalent sector).
- Ability to engage and converse at all levels.
