An award-winning, forward-thinking civil engineering and transport planning consultancy is expanding its team and looking for a Principal Civil Engineer to join its Cardiff or Bristol office. This is a genuine leadership opportunity perfect for someone who enjoys shaping projects, mentoring engineers, and building strong client relationships.

The Role

As a senior figure within the civil engineering team, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering development-led infrastructure schemes across drainage and highways. You’ll work closely with developers, architects, and local authorities — influencing projects from early planning through to completion.

This isn’t just a design role. It’s an opportunity to lead, guide, and make a real impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

Leading the design and delivery of drainage strategies in line with Sewers for Adoption, Building Regulations, and the SuDS Manual
Designing on- and off-site highway works in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and Manual for Streets
Delivering S278 and S38 schemes
Managing resources, reviewing technical outputs, and maintaining quality standards
Producing and reviewing Flood Risk Assessments and other technical reports
Acting as a trusted point of contact for clients and stakeholders
Mentoring and line managing junior engineers, supporting their development and progression

What We’re Looking For

5+ years’ consultancy experience in civil engineering
Degree or HND in Civil Engineering
IEng (or working towards ICE accreditation)
Strong drainage design experience, including SuDS
Proficiency in Info Drainage, Causeway Flow, or Micro Drainage
Skilled in AutoCAD and Site 3D (or similar 3D modelling software)
Proven project management experience across drainage and highways schemes
Confident managing client relationships and attending project meetings

Desirable Experience

Highways design including S278 and S38 agreements
Development-led infrastructure projects
Fee proposal preparation
Experience across the full planning lifecycle
Business development exposure
Previous line management responsibility
