Join to apply for the Transportation Planning Consultant role at Mc Elhanney
About Mc ElhanneyBased in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee‑owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities.
Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.
We're looking for a Transportation Planning Consultant to join our Western Canada transportation practice. This role offers variety: one week you might be calculating parking demand for a mountain resort hotel in Banff, the next analyzing traffic operations for a highway interchange upgrade, and the next writing a variance justification for a mixed‑use development in Calgary.
Our work spans:
- Traffic impact assessments for private development and municipal infrastructure
- Parking demand studies and variance justifications for unique sites
- Safety analysis and collision studies
- Construction traffic management plans
- Active transportation and multi‑modal planning
You'll work directly with Developers, Municipal Planners, and Provincial Reviewers, not just produce reports that sit on a shelf. The role suits someone who wants autonomy, client contact, and technical depth without being siloed into one project type.
This position reports to our Calgary branch but is open to remote work from anywhere in Canada.
What You’ll Do- Lead parking demand studies, traffic impact assessments, and safety analyses.
- Manage client relationships and communications.
- Interpret municipal bylaws, provincial standards, and apply engineering judgement.
- Write technical memos and reports that stand up to municipal review.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to practice development.
- Present findings to clients, planners, and municipal staff.
- 5+ years in consulting (planning, engineering, environmental, or similar).
- Demonstrated experience managing client relationships and expectations.
- Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
- Comfort with numbers, calculations, and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
- Consulting instincts: you know how to scope work, manage changes, and deliver.
- Valid (or in progress) Class 5 driver’s license.
- Additional assets:
- Transportation planning or engineering background
- P.Eng., MCIP, RPP, or CET designation
- Experience with Alberta municipalities (Calgary, Canmore, Banff, etc.)
- Familiarity with ITE Trip Generation, HCM, or TAC guidelines
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $120,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
