The Department of Environmental Protection is looking to hire an Environmental Engineering Trainee. This role involves various responsibilities within the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Section of the Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields Program, as well as the Facilities Section of the Waste Management Program. The work will focus on the investigation and remediation of hazardous sites to ensure adherence to federal and state regulations related to the identification and cleanup processes under the Federal Superfund and State Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, as well as reviewing permit applications for the Waste Management Program.
The position includes a 12-month training period, during which the employee will receive close supervision, formal training, and hands‑on experience to prepare for the responsibilities of an Environmental Engineering Specialist.
In this position, you will serve as a scientific advisor and engineering expert for both the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Section of the Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields Program, as well as the Facilities Section of the Waste Management Program, tasked with independently analyzing and addressing various engineering challenges faced by associates. Your responsibilities will include a thorough review of both general and detailed technical aspects related to soil and groundwater remediation efforts, which encompasses the management of water and air emissions resulting from these cleanups and associated activities.
You will also conduct independent assessments of plans for the installation of air pollution control systems and sources of air contamination, identifying any violations of Commonwealth regulations. This will involve performing source sampling, investigating operational processes within plants, and recommending modifications aimed at minimizing air pollutant emissions.
Additionally, you will provide comprehensive engineering evaluations of design documents, including drawings and technical calculations, ensuring their completeness and adequacy. Your role will further extend to analyzing and interpreting engineering data pertaining to Federal and State hazardous sites, enabling you to offer informed recommendations for remediation strategies. The Facilities Section of the Waste Management Program, which you will also be a part of, is responsible for reviewing permit applications related to Municipal, Residual, and Hazardous Waste Management.
Typical projects under this section include landfills, transfer facilities, waste processing sites, and facilities dedicated to the storage and treatment of hazardous waste, as well as those focused on hazardous waste recycling.
