Permit Technician – Public Space & Utility Permitting

We’re hiring a Permit Technician to play a key role in reviewing and issuing construction and occupancy permits for utility, roadway, and public space projects. You’ll work closely with engineers, contractors, and permit reviewers to make sure projects meet all safety, design, and regulatory standards.

This is a full-time hybrid role based in Washington, DC. You’ll split your time between remote work and in-office or field-based collaboration, with flexibility.

• Review and process permit applications for utility and construction work in the public right-of-way
• Issue permits in a timely manner (target: within 15 business days)
• Provide comments to align with District regulations and design standards
• Offer technical guidance to project teams and contractors
• Review engineering drawings, plans, and specifications for compliance
• Maintain accurate digital records in permitting systems and Share Point
• Track permit volumes, turnaround times, and other performance metrics
• Collaborate with inspectors and reviewers to support field coordination
• Participate in QA/QC and training sessions to ensure consistency

• 2+ years of experience in permit processing, construction administration, or public space management
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple applications and deadlines
• Familiar with permitting regulations (public space, utility, ROW) and traffic control plans
• Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint)
• Comfortable working in both digital permitting platforms and team environments.

• Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, urban planning, or related field
• Experience supporting public infrastructure projects in city or urban settings
• Familiar with Power BI or data tracking/reporting tools
• Experience in multi-agency or consultant-based project teams
