Title of Role: Director of Engineering – Document Verification

Location: Remote (must be based in San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Austin, or Seattle)

Company Stage of Funding: Late-stage venture-backed technology company

Office Type: Remote (US-based, city-restricted for collaboration)

Salary: $240,000 – $275,000 base salary + bonus + equity

Their platform enables businesses to verify real users in real time and proactively prevent fraud at massive scale. Serving customers across financial services, e-commerce, gaming, and regulated industries, the company operates at the intersection of AI, security, and large-scale distributed systems.

• Lead and manage a high-performing engineering team of approximately 7–10 engineers across backend, frontend, and mobile disciplines
• Own the technical strategy and architectural direction for a core document verification product used by enterprise customers
• Partner closely with Product, Data Science, Infrastructure, and other cross-functional leaders to define roadmaps and deliver new capabilities
• Drive scalable, secure, and reliable systems leveraging cloud infrastructure and modern AI/ML techniques
• Maintain a hands‑on leadership approach: reviewing designs, guiding technical decisions, and setting a high bar for engineering quality
• Mentor and develop engineers, fostering growth, accountability, and a strong team culture
• Translate business goals into technical execution while balancing speed, quality, and long‑term maintainability

• 10+ years of professional software development experience
• 5+ years in engineering leadership or people management roles
• Proven experience leading full‑stack engineering teams (backend, frontend, and/or mobile)
• Strong background in designing and scaling production systems in cloud environments
• Experience collaborating with product and data teams in fast‑moving, ambiguous environments
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives from concept to production

• Experience working on AI/ML‑powered systems; exposure to computer vision is a strong plus
• Background in identity verification, fraud detection, fintech, security, or regulated industries
• Familiarity with modern backend and frontend technologies such as Java, Scala, Go, React, or Type Script
• Experience operating systems on AWS and/or GCP
• Prior experience in high‑growth startup or scale‑up environments

• Competitive base salary: $240,000 – $275,000
