Overview

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated mid‑level Naval Architect to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. Prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations is ideal.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.
  • Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.
  • Conduct analyses on stability studies, assist with inclining experiments and weight and stability tests, and oversee design development.
Location & Travel

Location: Hybrid (partially onsite at USCG Headquarters and partially remote/work from home).

Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Physical Activity

Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve repetitive motion and periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including confined spaces, ladders, hatches, and vision.

Compensation

Pay Range: $80,000 – $110,000 (actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience).

Eligibility

U.S. Citizenship

Required:

U.S. citizenship is required and will be confirmed via I‑9/E‑Verify at the start of employment.

Security Clearance Eligibility

Required:

A DoD Secret security clearance is required. Candidates must either possess an active or interim Secret clearance (preferred) or be eligible for a Secret clearance upon hire.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture or a related ABET‑accredited technical or marine discipline.
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in Naval Architecture, including experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs preferred; experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
  • Experience with computer applications related to naval architecture and ship design.
  • Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.
  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.
