Overview
Ensuring the future of electricity transmission.
Responsibilities- Deliver all works with safety at the heart of actions and decisions; demonstrate safety behaviours, follow processes, and speak up when things don’t look right.
- Progress toward becoming a Senior Authorised Person (SAP); lead teams of fitters and contractors on high voltage substation projects, ensure safe working practices, provide risk assessments and method statements, and conduct toolbox talks.
- Manage, monitor and review progress on safety‑critical works; undertake site delivery activities as temporary works co‑ordinator and principal contractor under CDM regulations, and support keeping the UK’s electricity network running. Participate in standby rota for emergency call outs (additional payments apply).
- Two A-Levels including Maths or Physics (grade C or above), or a BTEC with Maths or Engineering module.
- A valid UK driving licence allowing you to drive three months before start date.
- Willingness to live away from home during training (Eakring Training Centre, Nottinghamshire; time in Loughborough for Higher National Certificate). Typical on-site stay Monday–Thursday, return home Friday–Sunday; time at Eakring decreases as you progress.
National Grid’s three-year Higher Apprenticeship Substations programme trains you to become an engineer in a substation, with progression to a Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Power Network Electrical Power Protection & Plant Commissioning.
