The Director of Technical Services will lead the technical strategy, engineering design, execution excellence of our BESS portfolio. This role is responsible for ensuring technical excellence across the project lifecycle, with a strong focus on supporting project development, procurement, execution, and the seamless transition to operations following Commercial Operation Date (COD).?
Responsibilities- Define and implement technical standards, specifications, and best practices across the BESS lifecycle to ensure design consistency, safety, and quality in all projects.
- Serve as the technical authority for the engineering team, leading system design, integration, and performance optimization to meet all technical and operational goals.
- Develop and maintain standardized engineering design packages, contract exhibits, system architectures, and documentation to align with industry codes and company best practices.
- Partner with the Development team to provide technical input during site selection, interconnection studies, permitting, and preliminary design stages.
- Review and validate energy models, equipment specifications, and system configurations to ensure technical accuracy and feasibility.
- Evaluate project sites for technical feasibility, including grid proximity, interconnection potential, and environmental constraints.
- Lead utility coordination and implementation of interconnection agreements, ensuring compliance with technical, permitting, and regulatory requirements.
- Support technical due diligence and commercial efforts for new projects, acquisitions, and partnerships, contributing expertise to RFP responses, vendor assessments, and risk evaluations.
- Oversee all technical activities during project execution, including design reviews, inspections, audits, and third‑party engineering coordination.
- Review commissioning and testing plans, including FAT, SAT, and pre‑COD validation, ensuring systems meet safety, performance, and compliance criteria.
- Manage the transition from project execution to operations, coordinating with Operations and Asset Management teams for post‑COD readiness, maintenance, and performance monitoring.
- Lead root‑cause analysis and issue resolution for complex technical challenges, promoting continuous improvement and cross‑functional learning.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulations (NEC, IEEE, NFPA, NERC, FERC) while fostering a culture of safety and quality.
- Build and lead a high‑performing engineering team, defining roles, managing consultants and vendors, and overseeing scope, deliverables, and timelines.
- Conduct internal technical reviews and optimization workshops to validate system designs, integration strategies, and overall project performance.
The Director, Technical Services will be based in Chicago, IL and may work in a hybrid arrangement with a combination of in‑office, remote work, and required travel. Travel to project sites and manufacturing facilities is required and will make up approximately 20‑50% of working time.
