Engineering Technician Position
The Department of Transportation, District 3, plays a vital role in the upkeep of Pennsylvania’s highways and is currently seeking to fill the position of Engineering Technician. This opportunity includes a comprehensive 12‑month training program designed to equip candidates with an in‑depth understanding of the various functions and duties associated with the engineering technician role. Throughout the program, participants will delve into multiple engineering disciplines—technology, design, construction, maintenance, and highway safety and traffic management—through hands‑on, practical learning experiences that develop crucial skills for a fulfilling career within the district.
Descriptionof Work
In this role you will undertake entry‑level technical responsibilities focused on design, construction, and maintenance initiatives. Your primary task will be to provide engineering support to different units within PennDOT while gaining insight into the department’s policies, procedures, organizational frameworks, and operational workflows. A structured training program with rotational assignments across various engineering districts will enable you to familiarize yourself with district personnel and processes while contributing to ongoing projects.
You will also receive classroom instruction, undergoing rigorous assessment for thoroughness, technical precision, and methodological integrity. Responsibilities include technical drafting tasks such as producing highway plans from field survey data, designing minor highway projects from initial engineering phase to the final plan, and completing minor design assignments under the supervision of a civil engineer, highway designer, or drafter. All work will utilize Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.

- Full‑time employment
- Work hours:
7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break - Telework:
Opportunity to work from home part‑time after successful completion of probation. Requires a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and an approved work location in Pennsylvania. Telework availability is subject to change. - Salary:

- Associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or other appropriate field of engineering technology
- Applicants may be considered eligible within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree
- Must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement
- Must be able to perform essential job functions
