We are actively seeking a skilled Roadway Project Engineer I to join our growing Transportation Division and contribute to the design and development of high-impact roadway infrastructure projects.
This is an ideal opportunity for a motivated engineer with a strong foundation in roadway design and Phase I studies who is ready to step into a project leadership role.
About the Role
As a Roadway Project Engineer I, you'll serve as a key contributor and emerging leader on transportation design projects ranging from urban arterial reconstructions to state highway corridor improvements. Working in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and agency partners, you will manage tasks, mentor junior staff, and ensure quality design deliverables from concept through preliminary engineering.
This full-time position can be based out of our Chicago, Peoria (IL), Crown Point, or Indianapolis (IN) offices, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule to support your productivity and work-life balance.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare comprehensive Phase I engineering studies and design reports in compliance with IDOT, county, and local agency guidelines.
- Develop preliminary horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, concept layouts, and plan view designs using Micro Station, GEOPAK, and Open Roads Designer.
- Prepare cost estimates, design memoranda, and project exhibits for stakeholder meetings and public involvement.
- Support the development and coordination of Location Design Approval Reports (LDARs), Project Development Reports (PDRs), and Environmental Reports.
- Review and QA/QC design plans and documentation produced by internal team members and subconsultants.
- Serve as a technical liaison between civil, structural, drainage, and traffic teams to ensure coordinated plan development.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing design guidance and professional development support.
- Attend client meetings, project review sessions, and site visits to support design progress and maintain strong relationships.
- Ensure that all work is completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with agency standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
- 8-12 years of relevant roadway design experience
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Illinois (required);
Indiana PE a plus - Proficiency in Micro Station, GEOPAK, and Open Roads Designer
- Strong working knowledge of IDOT Phase I requirements and local agency processes
- Familiarity with Indiana DOT (INDOT) project requirements a plus
- Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
