Principal Wastewater Process Engineer – Contract & Remote

We are recruiting a Principal Wastewater Process Engineer to support a major UK wastewater capital delivery programme. This is an initial 6–12 month contract offering the option to work fully remote, suited to an experienced Principal or a strong Senior Process Engineer.

The Principal Wastewater Process Engineer will play a key role in delivering high-quality wastewater process solutions across feasibility, design assurance, and subsequent outline and detailed design stages.

Role Overview – Principal Wastewater Process Engineer

As a Principal Wastewater Process Engineer, you will initially focus on feasibility studies and technical review of design partner outputs, ensuring process solutions are robust, compliant, and well developed. This will include reviewing and challenging designs produced by external delivery partners.

As schemes progress, the role will move into leading and supporting outline and detailed process design, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams through delivery.

Projects include wastewater treatment plant upgrades and new works valued between £10m–£30m, with some larger programmes up to £200m.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead wastewater process design from feasibility through outline and detailed design

* Review and check designs produced by delivery and consultancy partners

* Provide technical review of:

* Process models and calculations

* Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and P&IDs

* Mass balances and technical reports

* Support procurement through technical review of submissions

* Provide technical guidance and mentoring to process engineers

* Participate in design reviews, resolving technical challenges and risk

* Ensure process solutions are practical, compliant, and value-driven

Process & Technical Experience Required

This Principal Wastewater Process Engineer role is heavily focused on nutrient removal, particularly:

* Phosphorus removal (essential – majority of schemes)

* Nitrogen removal processes

* Conventional and mixed-media treatment solutions

* Activated sludge and wastewater treatment plant design

* Strong experience across feasibility and outline design is essential

Candidate Requirements

* Proven experience as a Principal Wastewater Process Engineer or strong Senior Wastewater Process Engineer

* Extensive wastewater process design experience

* Demonstrable background in P removal and nitrogen removal

* Experience reviewing and challenging consultant designs

* Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline

* Chartered status (or working towards) preferred

* Strong communication skills and ability to support junior engineers
