Overview
Apex Engineering Group has openings for Lead Engineering Technicians. The position is flexible regarding location and can be performed from any Apex office or hybrid. Primary responsibilities include serving as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction. A Lead Engineering Technician independently and collaboratively contributes to the design and development of project plans using CADD skills and may serve as Chief Inspector on construction projects.
Lead Engineering Technicians typically report to a Project Manager or senior team member. Additional responsibilities may include materials testing and inspection with concrete and asphalt during construction, support to survey crews, and training junior staff.
- Work as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction.
- Contribute to the design and development of project plans using CADD; act as Chief Inspector on construction projects as applicable.
- Provide materials testing and inspection support for concrete and asphalt operations during construction.
- Support survey crews and train junior staff.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- A 2-year associate degree in Engineering Technology or a technical degree in Drafting is highly desirable (applicable experience may be accepted).
- 5 to 10 years of experience preferred with basic civil engineering design and construction inspection principles.
- Proficiency with CADD platforms such as Bentley Open Roads Designer and Micro Station Connect and/or Autodesk AutoCAD and Civil 3D; this is especially important for remote work.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required.
- Material testing experience with MnDOT certifications is desired or the ability to attain these skills and certification training promptly.
- Working knowledge of MnDOT’s AASHTOWARE system to enter daily work reports related to project work.
- Willingness to interact with people and work in team environments.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong communication and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Ability to operate a computer in standard office conditions.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and terrains typical of construction sites.
- May require prolonged standing and walking for construction observation, materials testing, and surveying tasks.
- Must work scheduled hours and may involve overtime during the construction season.
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Prepare detailed dimensional drawings and design layouts from rough sketches, redlines, and topographic surveys using CADD software (Micro Station GEOPAK, Open Roads Designer, AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
- Calculate dimensions, square footage, profiles of roadways and utilities, and material quantities using computer programs and calculators.
- Follow company and client CADD standards when required.
- Follow directions and execute tasks assigned by Project Managers and Engineers in developing project plans and specifications.
- Assist with construction observation, surveying, and materials testing; develop skills as needed.
- Fulfill the role of resident project representative (RPR) or owner’s representative during construction.
- Communicate with contractors and manage time-sensitive situations effectively.
- Maintain regular communication with Apex and State/County Agency Project Managers and Project Engineers regarding construction progress and field issues.
- Document construction progress and quantities in field diaries and input data into automated systems.
- Attend company, project, and client meetings in person or via teleconference/remote video conference; remote video capability is essential when working offsite.
- Adhere to the company employee handbook and safety policies; perform responsibilities ethically and with attention to detail.
- Work independently and in a team; participate in training to develop communication, technical, and organizational skills.
- Travel and overnight stays may be required; overtime may be needed, especially during the construction season.

Hourly Base Pay Range: $35 - $50 per hour. Actual base pay depends on factors such as experience, education, licensure, location, and internal equity.
