What if you could do the kind of work the world needs? At WSP, you can contribute to landmark projects, work with leading minds, and develop a career with opportunities across diverse teams. This role sits within the Ground & Water team of the Earth & Environment business and supports growth of the soil team.

Your role

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Consultant or Consultant Soil Scientist to support the growth of our soil capability. You will join a small soil team and collaborate with colleagues in Ground & Water, Nature Advisory, Landscape, Environmental Planning, and Sustainability Policy & Compliance. The role is office- and site-based with a roughly 50/50 split between site visits and office work.

Location is flexible; travel to WSP offices for meetings/project work is expected. You will build relationships, stay organised, and contribute to the commercial and technical outputs of consultancy projects.

You will undertake fieldwork/site visits and support the production of written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessment, and tailored Environmental Statement components. You will manage data to support technical reporting, advise colleagues, and liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities, and third parties.

Team and work environment

The post will be within the Ground & Water service line. A typical week includes soil surveys, supporting report production for DCOs, EIAs and other assessments, and assisting in data management and risk assessment for site works. You will be supported by experienced team members and have opportunities to contribute to the growth of the team.

What we will be looking for

  • Degree in Soil Science or a related field (e.g., physical geology, environmental science) with 3–5 years of relevant practical experience
  • Experience in Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) surveys, Soil Resource Surveys, and site supervision during construction (ideally to BSSS standards)
  • Strong H&S awareness for site work
  • Team player comfortable working with a geographically distributed team
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills
  • Professional body membership (e.g., British Society of Soil Science) is desirable
  • Working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, construction impacts on agricultural land, and UK agricultural practice/business issues
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and be accountable for your output
  • Working knowledge of GIS; full driving licence; enjoy outdoor work

If you don’t meet every criterion, apply anyway to explore alignment with this role and other opportunities within the team.

Benefits and working arrangements

We offer hybrid working with some home-based and in-office collaboration. We support work-life balance with flexible working arrangements, including part-time options and the ability to purchase additional leave. We provide health and wellbeing initiatives (e.g., Thrive programme, Virtual GP, menopause support, gym benefits) and flexibility to manage time for personal activities. We support development and chartership, mentoring, and training opportunities.
