The Environment Agency is committed to building an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We need a Marine Water Quality Officer to help achieve our ambition that waters from catchment to coast are cleaner and thriving by 2050.
As one of three Water Quality Officers in the Operations Catchment Services team, you will:
1) assess the impact of discharges on water quality across key areas including Nuclear New Build, major infrastructure projects and the Water Industry National Environment Programme;
2) model bathing water quality and nutrient loads in estuaries;
3) provide technical support to stakeholders and customers.
We have two positions: one permanent and one fixed‑term for six months. The role is a national, hybrid/remote position with occasional travel to national meetings.
Key Responsibilities- Review complex reports and summarize key information for decision‑making.
- Interpret monitoring data and model outputs to support environmental protection.
- Use data to inform water quality models.
- Summarize and communicate technical work, escalating challenges when necessary.
- Build strong relationships across a dispersed team and with external partners.
- Participate in incident response, receiving full training and support; additional payment and flexible arrangements may apply.
- Use your initiative to contribute to the team's broader objectives.
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental science, marine science, engineering).
- Experience with data analysis and familiarity with modelling software.
- Proficiency in Excel, Access, R, Power BI, GIS, and specialist packages such as Mike or Cormix is advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to convey technical information to non‑technical audiences.
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, and capable of working independently in a virtual team.
- Comfortable with occasional travel and flexible working arrangements.
- Knowledge of water quality and the marine environment is desirable; professional membership progression is expected.
- Training and development opportunities will be provided.
- Advanced incident management training and support will be available.
