Overview

The Process Control Engineer position is a part of the Physical Plant:
Heating and Cooling Power Plant department within the Division of Facilities Planning and Management at UW-Madison. The Heating and Cooling Plant Process Control Engineer oversees the control systems and architecture of the Delta-V Distributed Control Center. They are the primary point of contact for changes to control structures, changes to the HMI system, troubleshooting systems and directing resources towards projects that enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Heating & Cooling Plants.

The Charter Street Heating & Cooling Plant and the Walnut Street Heating & Cooling Plant supply steam, chilled water, compressed air, and electricity to the UW campus, as well as to UW Hospital & Clinics, the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratories, and the Division of Veterans Affairs VA Hospital, and some other non-campus customers. Our plant operators also coordinate with the West Campus Cogeneration facility on steam and chilled water needs for heating and air-conditioning on campus.

Full-Time: 100% FTE

Hours generally are scheduled from 6:00AM to 2:30PM Monday through Friday. This position will provide some on call support, occasional nights, weekends and holidays. This position is a hybrid position: approximately 80% onsite and 20% remote. Remote work requires an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement. Per University policy, transportation between home and assigned work location is not payable/reimbursable and will be at the expense of the employee.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Integrates, identifies, troubleshoots, monitors, and resolves complex and varied supported services, systems, network, and application problems according to established processes and procedures
  • Assists in the design of system and infrastructure specifications, implementation, and/or integration, trend analysis, and capacity planning
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes the development, testing, implementation, integration, and installation of moderately complex system resources, upgrades, and security components in alignment with industry best practices
  • Serves as an expert point of contact for external stakeholders and IT partners regarding system integrations, identifies needs, provides solution options, and communicates issue updates and resolutions
  • Plans and directs staff implementation of small to medium technical projects as needed
  • Designs small components and runs, maintains, and operates technical systems and infrastructure
  • Participates in the evaluation of vendor software releases, upgrade planning, and impact. Documents and communicates system enhancements or changes

Compensation: $96,000 annual minimum. The starting salary for the position is $96,000 (but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications). Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of five (5) years in Digital Controls programming
  • Working knowledge integrating field devices such as valves, transmitters, motors and pumps to the control system
  • Experience with various communication standards including Modbus, Devicenet, and HART
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as serial, VIM, Ethernet IP, and various communications gateways are a plus
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ten (10)+ years experience in PLC, HMI, or general Control Logic Programming;
    Lean Principles;
    Six Sigma Black Belt;
    Data Analytics and/ or Visualization experience
Education

Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred) in Engineering, Computer Science or related field
