Immediate opening for an Environmental Engineer (Associate, Senior, Principal) within ADEQ’s Air Quality Division. The Senior Environmental Engineer will support the ADEQ’s Air Quality Permits Team, drafting air quality permits, including enforceable conditions, and ensuring compliance with state and federal air pollution laws and regulations. The position requires reviewing and processing detailed technical reports from the regulated community.
The State of Arizona offers a flexible, autonomous work culture. Remote positions must be performed within Arizona unless otherwise authorized.
Job Duties- Lead projects.
- Seek and identify resources.
- Review technical documents and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Review and evaluate complex permit applications and reports.
- Draft permits and technical support documents based on applicable regulations.
- Participate in site visits, data collection, inspections, and investigations regarding environmental topics.
- Provide technical support and assistance to staff, the regulated community, and the public regarding environmental topics.
- Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents.
- Drive technical outreach and conduct presentations regarding environmental topics.
- Mentor junior staff, audit technical work, and participate in hiring.
Knowledge of:
- State and federal environmental regulations pertaining to air quality (Clean Air Act, Arizona Administrative Code).
- Environmental and/or chemical engineering principles and practices.
- Chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and the chemical processes/transformations they undergo in the environment.
- Air pollution control technologies.
Skills & Abilities In:
- Interpreting and applying complex environmental regulations.
- Drafting complex permits and/or technical support documents.
- Operating air pollution control technologies, including performance testing practices.
- Compiling complex technical presentations and presenting to non‑technical audiences.
- Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
- Attention to detail, quality assurance, and adherence to standard work.
- Communication, research, complex problem‑solving, and facilitation skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering.
- Associate Engineer (Grade 28): 8+ years engineering experience (Master’s degree may substitute for two years). Professional Engineer license required.
- Senior Engineer (Grade 29):
Master’s in Environmental or Chemical Engineering preferred; 12+ years engineering experience (Master’s may substitute for two years). Professional Engineer license required. - Principal Engineer (Grade 30):
Master’s or higher in Environmental or Chemical Engineering; 15+ years engineering experience. Professional Engineer license required.
