Responsibilities- Provide structural and safety inspections of bridges, overhead signs, culverts, retaining walls, and gantries for both in‑house and consultant personnel.
- Complete field inspections in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards, NYSTA policies, and NYSDOT policies where applicable.
- Access structures via ladders, platforms, aerial lifts, and UBIU.
- Generate structure inspection reports.
- Compile schedules and coordinate traffic control.
- Maintain structure inventory updates and perform other tasks necessary to ensure the effective delivery of the structure inspection program for NYSTA.
- Perform Incident Command System (ICS) and other duties as assigned.
Current State Employees: Must be a New York State employee with at least one year of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to Grade 23 or above and be eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. All transfer candidates must hold a NYS Professional Engineer’s license with current registration.
General Public Candidates: Must hold a NYS Professional Engineer’s license with current registration AND either:
- One year of full‑time qualifying engineering experience related to transportation projects (e.g., highways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, traffic management and safety systems).
- A qualifying bachelor’s degree and relevant experience.
Qualifying Degrees include Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above.
Preferred Minimum Qualifications Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Approved Bridge Inspection Training;
Non‑Redundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM) Certification.
This position is CSEA and part of the NY HELPS program, which may allow appointment without examination under certain conditions.
