Senior / Principal Traffic Signals Engineer
We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented Senior or Principal Engineer to join the Liveable Places Traffic Signal Design team, based in Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow, Southampton or other WSP UK locations.
Responsibilities- Utilise technical expertise in traffic signals or traffic engineering to develop designs, supervise, train, check and approve work undertaken by junior colleagues.
- Manage traffic signal projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
- Liaise with clients, build trusted relationships, proactively manage expectations and provide comprehensive advice.
- Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
- Support others to maximise personal contribution to project/team goals.
- Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
- Lead and manage junior staff in delivery of traffic signal design packages, including design drawings, construction details, specifications, controller configurations, MOVA datasets, FAT/SAT, etc.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
- Coordinate team resources, supporting the setup of teams and placing the right people in the right roles.
- Relevant knowledge and experience of traffic signal design at various stages of the project life cycle, including local transport modelling using Lin Sig, controller configuration TR2500, SCOOT and MOVA design, implementation and validation.
- Demonstrable experience in leading a single or multiple design disciplines in relevant projects (road, public transport, active travel, public realm or private development).
- Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
- Proficiency in design outputs using Autodesk Civil 3D, Key Signals or similar.
- Ability to manage change on tasks/projects, clearly communicating impacts on programme, cost and quality.
- Excellent communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Working towards or having achieved Chartered Civil Engineer or Incorporated Engineer is advantageous.
- Thorough understanding and application of relevant design codes, including the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, Local Authority design guidance and experience preparing drawings for contract documentation.
- Experience complying with Designers Duties under CDM regulations.
