The Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation (a 501c3 nonprofit) is looking for a part-time non-exempt (hourly) position to join the Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation (Foundation) team at our office in Bellingham, WA. The Buoyant Beginnings Program Coordinator, a part-time non-exempt employee position, coordinates the development and implementation of the Buoyant Beginnings Pre-Apprenticeship for Maritime Careers program (BBPrep). This position, in collaboration with Lummi Nation and the Foundation, supports the development and implementation of the BBPrep program serving young adults and employer partners within Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

Duties

and Responsibilities

The Program Coordinator, in collaboration with the Foundation’s Program Director and Advisor, and Lummi Nation colleagues, will assist with performing the following tasks in these general categories:

Program Development and Implementation
  • Develop the schedule for the 6-week summer program
  • Coordinate with Quadrant Marine Institute (QMI) for the implementation of the online learning management module
  • Review, develop, and assist with implementation of the QMI curriculum units
  • Coordinate with Instructors/Contractors for all curriculum units
  • Coordinate with Employer Partners for Tours, Job Shadows, and Work Experience
  • Develop and manage the application process (distribution, online management of applications, screening, interviewing, selecting, communicating with all candidates, official registration materials)
  • Develop and maintain classroom management tasks (notebooks, lanyards, student supplies, beverages, table leaders, waste management, etc.)
  • Coordinate with participants for wrap-around supports (e.g., transportation, food security, childcare, learning supports, etc.)
Relationships
  • Lummi Nation colleagues and additional state tribes
  • State and local apprenticeship leaders, workforce-related personnel, and members of the Buoyant Beginnings Advisory Committee
  • Port Authorities including Port of Bellingham and additional Port Districts throughout the State
  • Legislative and Government entities
  • Employer partners and instructors
  • Educational – secondary and post-secondary entities
  • Granting entities
Administration
  • Supplies rental/purchase and maintenance
  • Utilizing the Apprenticeship Registration and Tracking System (ARTS) via Labor & Industries
  • Interfacing with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council (WSATC)
  • Coordination with Program Director for all additional administrative tasks
Marketing
  • Website, print material, press releases, signage, presentations
  • Digital and Social media campaigns including email marketing, etc.
  • Outreach events such as career and job fairs, classroom presentations
Additional tasks

may include, but not limited to, providing support for current and future Foundation programs

Working Environment/Schedule

This position provides a computer, work space, and office supplies. While the office location may change, remote work is also permitted with reimbursement of office supplies. The job will require occasional evening work to attend meetings and events. Travel within the region is required with mileage reimbursed.

The BBPrep 6-week summer session typically runs from early July to mid-August.

  • September to April estimated hours are 30 hours/week.
  • May through August estimated hours is 40 hours/week.

Expect outdoor work in boatyards, docks, on vessels and conditions typical of marine trades work. Indoor workshops may be unheated or have open bay doors; office environments are typically open-concept shared work spaces. Assisting instructors can involve physical activity (lifting/moving/setting up tools and materials)

Qualifications Required
  • Strong communication skills (interpersonal, oral and written)
  • Resourceful, organized, and manages time
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and independently
  • Ability to work with all people of ranging abilities
  • Experience with software applications (i.e., Adobe, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Salesforce, and various social media platforms.)
Preferred
  • Understanding of apprenticeship/pre-apprenticeship structures and requirements
  • Familiarity with marine terminology and maritime industry
