The Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State seeks a student-centered professional committed to the mission of a living learning community to assist with first-year academic advising in the Summer of 2026. Advising and enrollment is part of the MSU’s New Student Orientation program, offering incoming students one-on-one time with an academic advisor to welcome them to Lyman Briggs College and to develop their first semester schedule.
This hire is part of college-wide programs and initiatives focused on creating an inclusive environment for all of our students. We believe that this agenda is best advanced by a college of faculty, advisors, staff, and students with varied perspectives and lived experiences who challenge biases and conventions and teach and learn in community.
The primary roles of this position include:
- Meeting first year students virtually in scheduled, online, one-on-one appointments.
- Provide an overview of the college and academic requirements.
- Partner with the students to develop and enroll in a first semester schedule.
- Maintain accurate records of the appointments and maintain FERPA guidelines.
- Graduate student at Michigan State University
- Available for 16-17 hours a week during June and July.
- Ability to work virtually and connect via Teams and/or Zoom for meetings.
- Available for 2-3 training sessions in April and May to be scheduled in conjunction with staff.
- Experience in student advising and/or retention (high school or college-age), with skills in developing relationships with current students and families.
- Experience in supporting students with diverse and intersectional identities, including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, and ability.
- Ability to manage student records and maintain FERPA expectations.
- Appreciation for study in the sciences, technology, or interdisciplinary STEM fields.
- Can articulate the benefits of a residential learning environment.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to adapt messages to a variety of audiences.
- Strong collaboration skills. Ability to partner with other academic advisors to find viable solutions for students.
$25/hour, 16-17 hours a week
