Pay Range

Pay Range $20.45 - $23.85

Job Description

Oversee, manage and supervise the day-to-day operations of the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories used in the Chemistry Department’s undergraduate organic chemistry courses ( CHE 276 and CHE 326). Purchase all relevant supplies. Coordinate with campus safety office to ensure all best practices are followed. Co-supervise Teaching Assistants (TA) when needed. Work closely with faculty on course logistics, instrumentation planning, and implementation of weekly labs.

Handles requests and distribution of departmental shared chemicals and gases, such as acetone and ethanol. May facilitate data collection for department metrics or pedagogical studies.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU , Local 200

United.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related science.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a research or educational laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare chemicals, reagents, and supplies used in CHE 276 and 326. Set up and take down all lab experiments during the academic year and summer sessions.
  • Communicate with course professors and teaching assistants regarding all aspects of CHE 276 and 326.
  • Help teaching assistants with specific techniques and keep them aware of safety hazards involved in each experiment.
  • Contribute to problem solving, development, and improvement of course materials and strategies including lab-based, written, and digital resources.
  • Oversee maintenance of the laboratories including repair and installation of large and small instruments and equipment.
  • Purchase chemicals, supplies, and equipment as needed for CHE 276 and 326 during the academic year and summer sessions in a timely manner.
  • Research price comparisons, initiate purchase orders, and request quotes from multiple vendors as necessary for large purchases.
