The Fine Arts Department at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) invites applications for a part‑time faculty position in Studio Arts within the undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. This position supports online instruction in Digital Arts, Digital Media Production, Graphic Design, and Digital Photography, delivered in traditional 15‑week semesters and/or 8‑week Competency‑Based Education (CBE) formats. Scheduling is flexible and aligned with course delivery needs.

The ideal candidate is an innovative, student‑centered educator with strong technical expertise in digital media and design, experience teaching in online or hybrid environments, and a commitment to fostering creative development in a virtual setting. The faculty member reports to the Chair of Arts & Humanities and collaborates with the Fine Arts Program Advisor, contributing to instruction, curriculum development, student success initiatives, and program growth.

Courses are fully online and asynchronous, with opportunities for regular interpersonal interaction with students.

Compensation is on a per‑credit‑hour basis, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and aligned with applicable collective bargaining agreements or institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach online Studio Arts courses in 15‑week and 8‑week CBE formats, including introductory and advanced courses in Digital Arts, Digital Media Production, Graphic Design, and Digital Photography.
  • Deliver engaging instruction using synchronous and asynchronous methods, including demonstrations, recorded lectures, and project‑based assignments.
  • Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to provide a high‑quality, high‑touch online learning experience for BFA majors, Graphic Design minors/certificate students, and General Education students.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, ensuring alignment with program outcomes, accreditation standards, and current industry practices.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback, hold virtual office hours, and support students in portfolio development.
  • Participate in assessment and accreditation processes.
  • Support digital/virtual student exhibitions and promote the Studio Arts program within academic and artistic communities.
  • Maintain an active professional practice and stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in online arts education.
Required Qualifications
  • MFA in Graphic Design, Digital Art, Photography, Media Production, Intermedia, or a closely related discipline (or currently enrolled in an accredited program).
  • Experience teaching studio‑based courses in digital design, media production, graphic design, photography, or related areas at the college/university level, particularly online or hybrid.
  • Strong professional portfolio demonstrating expertise in visual communication, graphic design, digital media, photography, and/or media production.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and accessible free/low‑cost alternatives; familiarity with LMS and digital collaboration tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage students in a virtual learning environment.
  • Dedication to supporting a positive and inclusive learning community.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching online, hybrid, and/or CBE courses using an LMS.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and facilitate engaging, high‑touch online studio courses.
