Position Overview
This position is for an educator to instruct a supplemental course for our after school, college preparation program, targeting high school age students from Minneapolis Public Schools. The instructor for the following course will teach 9th Grade Science Exploration & Study Skills, 10th Grade English Composition, 11th Grade ACT Preparation & Career Exploration, or 12th Grade College Planning. The class meets one time per week, and the instructor must be available from 3:00-6:00 pm as well as set time to prepare the course with a Teaching Assistant.

Job ResponsibilitiesInstruction (40%)
- Teach specific class in a classroom at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus (usually Appleby Hall), in alignment with the Minneapolis School District calendar
- Monitor student attendance
- Document student performance
Curriculum and Lesson Plan Development (25%)
- Revise and/or update curriculum for a high school level course
- Prepare weekly lesson plans that include differentiated instruction that supports students' individual needs and incorporates a multi-sensory approach
- Manage the class gradebook
Assessment, Intervention, and Progress Monitoring (25%)
- Assess student academic growth
- Inform TRIO UB staff of student academic and/or social-emotional concerns
- Problem-solve with TRIO UB staff areas of concern to help inform intervention
- Complete student evaluations as required by TRIO UB program
Supervision of Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (8%)
- Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant
- Assign duties for the TA to assist with the successful delivery of course
Other (2%)
- Attend and complete required staff training and occasional staff meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree
- Experience with direct classroom instruction
- Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting)
- Available during the specified time (October to May or January to May) and follow the Minneapolis Public School calendar
- Ability to develop and deliver content in ways that effectively account for a variety of backgrounds, communities, identities, and abilities
- Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching in the specific content area
- Experience working w/ English Language Learners
- Experience working with low-income, and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college (can be outside a classroom setting)
- Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
- Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
- Experience supervising teaching assistants
- Strong communication skills (written and oral)
- Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO UB program goals
- Shared life experiences with TRIO-like populations including low income, first-generation, or overcome significant obstacles in pursuit of higher education

TRIO Upward Bound (TRIO UB) is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education equal educational opportunity program. TRIO UB is a college preparatory program for high school students who come from low-income families and are working towards being a first generation college student. TRIO UB works with students, parents, schools and communities, on a long-term and intensive basis to help generate both individual and systemic change.
