Academic Coach

Overview

Academic Coaches provide personalized interactions to assist students in navigating their educational goals. They help students own their learning by supporting time management, software use, study skills, stress management, test-taking strategies, organizational skills, and other academic success skills. They work with students in-person (drop-in and by appointment) and online (by appointment only). The Learning Commons (LC) offers services to promote student success, including tutoring, writing support, coaching, the Learning Assistant program, open study space, and more.

• Provide personalized guidance to students to support academic success.
• Assist with time management, study skills, software tools (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office), and other learning strategies.
• Engage with students in-person at the UAA Consortium Library (drop-in and by appointment) and online by appointment.
• Lead and contribute to projects such as creating tips sheets, maintaining documents and handouts, and conducting workshops on academic skills.
• Collaborate with a diverse student population and adapt support to individual needs.

• Currently enrolled in at least 6 credits at UAA and in good academic standing.
• Completed a minimum of 15 credits.
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn UAA systems and software platforms (e.g., Blackboard, Google Suite, Excel, Word, EAB Navigate, and other tools).
• Customer service experience (preferred).
• One (1) year of work or volunteer experience, particularly in a university setting (preferred).

• Location:
  
  University of Alaska campus in Anchorage.
• Position type:
  Student Assistant 2, part-time, up to 20 hours/week with starting pay $17.19/hour.
• Hybrid/onsite:
  On-site work may be required; hybrid or remote work may be approved for Alaska-based employees; remote work outside Alaska may be approved only in exceptional circumstances.

• Throughout the semester, students should notify the Academic Coach hiring manager if they drop classes and enroll in fewer than 6 credits.
• Board of Regents policy limits student employment to 20 hours per week during a semester and 40 hours per week between semesters or during summer sessions. Students must disclose other student employment to the hiring manager.
