Position: Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (AC.08.4)

Overview

The Department of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand is looking to appoint one (1) new member of academic staff at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. This is a permanent position at the rank of either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (1 position). The Department particularly encourages applications from scholars who have knowledge of, and are prepared to teach in, the Politics of Development and/or Comparative Politics.

The successful candidate will be expected to integrate into the Department’s lifeworld through teaching large and diverse classes in all years of study, cooperating with colleagues in advancing the objectives of the Department, and contributing actively to the intellectual and administrative life of the Department and University. Candidates at both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer levels should possess a PhD. Candidates with university teaching experience, supervision of postgraduate students, and an established publication record will have a strong advantage.

Candidates with an established track record of academic administration and fundraising will have an advantage at the Senior Lecturer level. The Department is committed to demographic representativeness and is keen to attract candidates currently under-represented in the department.

Remuneration

Responsibilities
  • Teach large and diverse classes in all years of study and contribute to the Department’s teaching objectives.
  • Cooperate with colleagues in advancing the Department’s objectives and contribute to its intellectual and administrative life.
  • At Lecturer level: engage in teaching, supervision of postgraduate students where applicable, and contribute to research and service.
  • At Senior Lecturer level: demonstrate an established track record in academic administration and fundraising, in addition to teaching, supervision, research, and service.
  • Contribute to demographic representativeness in appointments.
Qualifications
  • PhD required.
  • University teaching experience and supervision of postgraduate students are desirable.
  • Established publication record is advantageous for both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer levels.
