The Director of Special Education provides leadership and support for the delivery of special education instructional programs for students in elementary programs. The purpose of this position is to work collaboratively with Special Education Program Specialists and the local schools to assist students with disabilities in acquiring the knowledge and skills as set forth by their Individualized Education Program. The Director works to ensure staff development opportunities are provided for the special education program, including administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and district office staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Participate in decision making discussions and planning meetings with the Assistant Superintendent developing procedures, implementing policies, and regulations for IDEA, 504, FERPA, homebound/home based services, Medicaid Programs and plans, and supervising the compliance of each
- Direct and consult with principals, special education staff, and parents to plan the delivery of special education services for students with disabilities
- Evaluate on an ongoing basis, the Special Education curriculum, procedures, behavior, and individual students' needs and achievements
- Collaborate with district staff on curriculum, instruction, programming, behavior, and IEP development
- Coordinate teams of specialists to develop curriculum, programming, behavior, and IEP development processes and expectations
- Supervise/evaluate and coordinate special education program specialists and behavior specialists and their involvement in classroom and school programs
- Supervise/evaluate additional staff such as behavior leads and teachers
- Coordinate and direct the in-service and training of district and school staff directly related to instruction, behavior, and IEP development
- Develop and use data collection methods to problem solve department matters
- Provide staff support and direct contact with the schools to troubleshoot difficulties of students with disabilities
- Keep informed of all legal requirements governing Special Education
- Develop local policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal guidelines as well as the adaptation of school policies to include special education needs
- Participate in activities to promote professional development and use clinical/educational research to enhance services
- Practice professional communication strategies so stakeholders are knowledgeable about pertinent issues
- Adhere to the ethical standards and codes of the profession, and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education programs and behavior analysis.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Education and/or
Experience:
Masters or Educational Specialist degree in Administration, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related educational field. Five years’ experience in special education. Previous leadership and experience in behavior analysis preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluations of certified personnel.
