Position Overview

You are required to work at your assigned work location during scheduled work times.

Schedule:

Monday–Friday, typically 7 am start. Work arrangements are subject to change at any time.

This teaching position focuses on academic, vocational, and educational services for committed youth in institutional facilities. Responsibilities include classroom instruction in special education, managing classroom behavior, developing lesson plans aligned with state and DYS standards, and collaborating with community programs.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain an appropriate classroom setting using effective classroom management skills and engagement strategies that accommodate student needs.
  • Assess new and continuing students with multiple assessment methods and document progress monitoring aligned with standards.
  • Prepare daily and unit lesson plans aligned with state standards, DYS power standards, and critical skills; implement technology-rich, research‑based strategies suitable for multi‑age/multi‑level students.
  • Ensure educational records are maintained in IC and/or Trails and meet deadlines for attendance and grades.
  • Apply interventions, IEP accommodations, and behavioral plans with fidelity, and communicate growth data to stakeholders.
  • Serve as substitute teacher when required, ensuring robust lessons and timely classroom readiness.
Specific Duties
  • Provide ongoing data and feedback to the Special Education Coordinator regarding student needs and IEP goals.
  • Determine instructional complexity and standards appropriate for each student’s priorities.
  • Communicate necessary information to stakeholders within a limited time frame.
  • Develop proactive positive behavioral interventions based on the DYS model.
  • Plan engaging themes, topics, and real‑world career skills for lessons.
  • Create and use rubrics for student work.
Qualifications
  • Minimum:
    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution related to the assignment.
  • Current, valid Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education with a Special Education endorsement.
  • Experience with urban and at‑risk populations; understanding of classroom‑based behavioral interventions.
  • Knowledge of research‑based instructional strategies and content‑area expertise.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency with technology to enhance instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Dual endorsements or documentation in multiple content areas.
  • Licensure aligned to the position.
  • Experience with IEPs, 504s, and multilingual backgrounds.
  • Experience with trauma‑informed practices and differentiated instruction.
  • Project‑based learning experience; leadership and secondary school experience.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Full background check and reference check required.
  • Must maintain Colorado residency and a valid, non‑restricted Colorado Driver’s License (or U.S. Driver’s License within 30 miles of the CO border).
  • Motor vehicle check required; may operate state‑owned vehicles for job duties, training, or client visits.
  • Must pass Escape and Evade training and complete annual mandatory training.
