This course is a progressive primer for students who want more knowledge about fire and emergency services administration. The course demonstrates the importance of the following skills that are necessary to manage and lead a fire and emergency services department through the challenges and changes of the 21st century: persuasion and influence, accountable budgeting, anticipation of challenges and the need for change, and using specific management tools for analyzing and solving problems.

A central part of the course focuses on how the leadership of a fire and emergency services department develops internal and external cooperation to create a coordinated approach to achieving the department’s mission.

• Political and Legal Foundations for Fire Protection
• Personnel Management for the Fire Service
• Applications of Fire Research
• Fire Prevention
• Community Risk Reduction for the Fire and Emergency Services
• Fire Service Ethics
• AND/OR Fire Science Capstone

• Facilitate weekly main discussion forums to engage students in the online classroom
• Adhere to weekly grading requirements, deadlines, and time frames
• Respond to students’ questions and emails within the established time frames
• Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement, and Mission of Grand Canyon University

• Preferred: PhD in Fire Science Administration or PhD in Leadership WITH 3 years of experience in an active firefighting leadership role within a fire department
• Minimum: Master’s in Fire Science Administration or Master’s in Fire and Emergency Management or a Master’s in a field of Fire Science or Master’s in Leadership WITH 3 years of experience in an active firefighting leadership role within a fire department
• Exceptions may be granted to individuals with Master’s in any field with 18 graduate credits in Fire Science AND has 3 years of experience in an active firefighting leadership role within a fire department
