Student Worker - Peer Coach
We are searching for a Student Worker - Peer Coach at our Bryan Campus.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesJob Summary
The main objectives of the peer coaching position are to help recruit, engage, and retain students with a background in foster care and ensure they are accessing and utilizing resources/ benefits available due to their status as former foster youth, with particular attention to state tuition and fee waiver utilization. Peer coaches will work directly with identified students as they become familiar with Blinn College's campus resources and any benefits or services for which the students may be eligible (i.e. state tuition and fee waiver, Education and Training Vouchers, Supervised Independent Living programs, etc.).
Peer coaches will engage students with experience in foster care by directly reaching out to students and provide individual and programmatic support as appropriate. Peer coaches will work directly with and be supervised by the CPS Liaison in the Office of Disability Services. Further, peer coaches will work directly with Education Reach for Texas staff to learn, practice, and document use of a peer coaching model as part of a pilot program to increase engagement and access to campus and community resources and the state tuition and fee waiver.
Accountabilities
- Job duties can be flexed, and work may be done around class schedules.
- Ability to follow through on assigned tasks and work independently.
- Attend all scheduled meetings.
- Applicants should be familiar with campus processes at Blinn College District including but not limited to making appointments with academic advisors, class registration, accessing campus and DFPS resources, etc.
- Provide outreach and engagement to students at Blinn identified as having lived experience in the foster care system.
- Practice utilization of a peer coaching model being piloted for the project (training will be provided).
- Assist in assessment of student needs and eligibility for other services and benefits and connect students to resources as appropriate with the support of the institution's higher education foster care liaison.
- Assist in determining student eligibility for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (Child Protective Services) state tuition and fee waiver for former foster youth.
- Track all touchpoints and other data related to the project and report on a regular basis to grant staff (training provided).
- Attend all in-person and online trainings and professional development related to the peer coaching model/pilot project and engagement of students with experience in foster care (i.e. Peer coaching training, Education Reach for Texans annual conference and webinars, regional meeting etc.).
- Maintain a simple budget of money spent to engage students/provide student programming.
Must be at least half-time student. Must have excellent written and verbal communications, organizational, and public relations skills. Computer literacy and ability to learn proprietary software.
Minimum Competencies- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to assist the office. Ability to plan ahead, adhere to confidentiality requirements and be on time.
- Must be self-motivated and proficient in handling remote work.
Students with lived experience in the foster care system to serve as peer coaches. The peer coaches will work alongside Blinn College District higher education foster care liaison and Education Reach for Texans staff to engage students with a background in foster care and connect them with resources and benefits for which they are eligible.
