Position OverviewThe College of Engineering at Penn State seeks an academic adviser to provide direct academic support to undergraduate students in their second year through graduation within a specific major. Advisers will collaborate with department faculty, other academic advisers, and the Engineering Advising Center to align student academic plans.
Minimum Education , Experience & Certifications- Master’s degree required.
- Advanced Professional: 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Intermediate Professional: 1+ year of relevant experience.
- No required certifications.
- Advise undergraduate students on academic programs and refer to professional services.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Guide students in course selection and scheduling.
- Resolve academic problems, escalating unusual matters.
- Monitor academic progress.
- Participate in college programs such as New Student Orientation, Accepted Student Programs, and group advising presentations.
- Contribute to process development and innovation.
- Interact with students, faculty, parents, and staff.
- Develop relationships with key members of the academic community.
- Enthusiasm for working with college students.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Knowledge of student identity development and growth mindset theories.
- Desire to develop high-quality academic advising practices.
- Ability to interface effectively with a diverse community.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to work with students in a high-volume environment.
- Background working with high school or college-aged students and a proven track record serving diverse student populations.
Salary range: $42,100 – $67,300.
