Department Summary

The SJSU Anthropology Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning within our field and for our students. Through scholarly work and direct participation in research programs, both locally and internationally, students explore the diverse nature of human experiences across cultures worldwide. By studying people, their lifestyles, and how they adapt to cultural changes, both past and present, students are better prepared to comprehend human behavior at local and global levels.

Comparative and evolutionary, scientific and humanistic, anthropology provides a unique opportunity for broadening and integrating one's perspective on human existence. Through classes, fieldwork, and research, students develop an understanding of human cultural heritage, culture change, and cultural diversity in both past and contemporary societies. The SJSU Anthropology Department offers regular session in‑person undergraduate BA degree programs in Anthropology and Behavioral Science, an in‑person MA degree program in Applied Anthropology, and two special sessions online degree programs: (1) an Anthropology BA;

and (2) an Interdisciplinary Studies BA with a Science, Technology & Society concentration.
