The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for a part-time (38%) Senior Extension Associate Mediation & Arbitration Associate in the Scheinman Institute in the Extension/Outreach Division.
Our Team:
The Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution (http://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) is the nation’s leading center for the study of workplace conflict resolution, engaging in a broad range of research, teaching, and outreach activities.
What you will do:
The position will be responsible for promoting and supporting Scheinman Institute activities in the Washington, DC and mid-Atlantic labor relations communities.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Teach professional development workshops in public programs and customized on-site programs in dispute resolution, labor-management relations, conflict management skills and strategies, and professional development for neutrals. Lead and moderate panels, webinars, and workshops with an emphasis on identifying participants from the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region.
- Design new curriculum and update current curriculum for the Professional Mediation Certificate program and Labor Arbitrator programs and provide instruction.
- Support the Arbitration Advocacy and Labor Relations Certificate Programs, seeking to extend the geographical diversity in the programs, with a specific focus on:
Connecting with law firms, unions, and public and private employers from Washington DC, VA and MD. Provide in-depth knowledge and create curriculum specific to the Washington DC, VA and MD regions, including, but not limited to, labor relations and dispute resolution for public agencies.
- Collaborate with resident faculty on research on labor and employment dispute resolution, facilitate student engagement with practitioners outside and inside the classroom.
- Identify potential clients and program content for custom professional development programs and technical assistance with a particular focus on the Washington, DC, VA and MD areas. Help market those programs, draft contracts, and negotiate contracts and terms with clients.
Extension Associate is a part-time (38%), academic, non-tenure track, term position with an initial appointment through June 30, 2027. The position may be re-appointed based on recommendations by the Academic Director and Senior Associate Dean for Outreach and Sponsored Research, as well as available funding and work.
The ideal candidate is experienced in all aspects of labor and employment dispute resolution and labor-management relations as a practitioner and/or educator. The candidate should also demonstrate the ability to create education/training programs for neutrals, as well as union and management practitioners.
- Master’s degree or Law degree in related subject matter expertise (labor relations, labor law, curriculum design, dispute resolution, public education) and/or some combination of related degree/formal training and/or related professional work.
- Demonstrated experience developing educational programs and providing instruction for neutrals and labor and management professionals.
- Minimum of eight years teaching related courses, conducting training to relevant target audience, and/or conducting research in the thematic content area.
- Possess sufficient knowledge of training/learning design, curriculum development, and adult learning pedagogy.
- Demonstrated leadership skills as a self-starter.
- Demonstrated experience recruiting clients, designing and marketing programs, and negotiating contracts with clients.
You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrated relevant experience of more than 10 years working as a mediator or arbitrator, and/or at a senior level in a corporate, union, or academic setting in labor related positions.
- Demonstrated experience in managing large projects, designing and managing complex dispute resolution or labor relations systems.
- Experience with distance learning methods.
