Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay Market Pay).

Duties

This position will function as Deputy Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) and Medical Director of Home Based Primary Care (HBPC). The incumbent will be responsible for professional peer review, organizational improvement, continuing education, scopes of practice, clinical privileging, and other quality and process improvement activities to meet annual performance measures and monitors as identified by facility and higher-level management/program officials within and outside of the VA.

The incumbent must possess strong leadership qualities and will assist the Chief of GEC with these administrative and clinical responsibilities.

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Pay: Competitive salary; annual performance bonus; regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days per year (26 days annual leave; 13 days sick leave; 11 federal holidays; possible 5 days for CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US state or territory

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (full-time with board certification)

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Requirements Conditions of employment
  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment; applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must complete online onboarding; acceptable identification requirements (effective May 7, 2025) include REAL
    -compliant IDs.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.

Qualifications

To qualify you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a United States state/territory/DC.
  • Residency Training:
    Approved by VA; eligible for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other residencies with equivalent experience as defined by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under supervision.
  • English proficiency.

Preferred Experience: Board certified or Board Eligible in Geriatrics.

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from an accredited school (LCME or AOA-accredited). Foreign medical graduates may require ECFMG verification where applicable.
