University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers a fantastic opportunity for dedicated doctors join our Children’s Emergency Department (CED) team. The post starts in September 2026.
Main duties of the jobAs a Senior Fellow, you will provide high‑quality clinical care to acutely unwell and injured children as part of the full‑shift resident doctor rota (days, mids, twilights and nights). You will also have full access to the rich and varied teaching programme in Children’s ED and the Children’s Hospital, with an allocated educational supervisor and fellowship time in a chosen area of interest.
- Clerking new patients and reviewing those in the Paediatric Short Stay Unit
- Participating in ward rounds and clinical meetings
- Supporting the team in managing critically ill children in resuscitation when required
- Deliver clinical time in CED, developing your skills in Paediatric Emergency Medicine within the dedicated middle‑grade rota, with dedicated time to develop your area of interest.
- Manage children within the footprint in any of these clinical areas with support where required. Where relevant to training, doctors will be supported in mapping their experience to the PEM, Emergency Medicine and Paediatric curricula.
- Contribute towards our extensive education programme.
- Actively participate in ongoing research as part of our commitment to PERUKI and PEM research.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives with a focus on your preferred area of interest, building skills, knowledge and leadership abilities.
- Fellowship roles and responsibilities may include:
Paediatric Trauma, Quality Improvement, Simulation, Education, Wellbeing.
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non‑training fellow doctors and dentists). Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.
Grades for Trust appointed (non‑training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors’ work schedule (eg. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay).
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Salary range: £65,048 ‑ £73,992 per annum, based on experience.
Person Specification Qualifications- Advise whether you hold MPCPCH and/or MRCEM and provide the date(s) these qualifications were achieved.
- Advise details of any ETC or equivalent course completed, including the date(s) of completion.
- Provide an example when you have applied sound clinical judgement to a problem, demonstrating an appropriate knowledge base.
- Advise whether you hold provider status in APLS (or an equivalent qualification), including dates where applicable.
- Describe your experience of working in the NHS for at least 12 months, including the organisation(s), role(s), and key responsibilities.
- Provide details of any CT3+ training (or equivalent) in Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine, including where and when this experience was gained.
- Provide an example of when you’ve been involved in a quality improvement project, advise how it improved patient care, and where the work was presented (local, regional, national, or international).
- Provide details of any postgraduate qualifications in medical education, quality improvement, or related fields.
