Overview

Senior Fellow in Breast Surgery at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Princess Anne Hospital. This is a part-time post in Breast Surgery. The closing date is 15 February 2026.

  • To be involved in the delivery of care in breast surgery, including care of urgent and emergency breast admissions during working hours.

Job responsibilities

This is a part-time post in Breast Surgery, based at the Princess Anne Hospital. The main clinical duties of the post will be described in the attached Job Description and Person Specification document, which includes the key responsibilities, role expectations, and the qualifications required for the role.

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists). Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office criteria prior to submitting an application.

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, with a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, with basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay). Salary will be assessed on experience and skills.

Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5 include:

  • Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
  • Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
  • A portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression criteria in line with the Curriculum for the speciality (similar to deanery trainee)

Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Experience to ST4 level or equivalent (in surgery)
  • Recent experience in NHS surgical department at registrar level
  • Experience in the management of breast disease and breast sepsis
  • Further higher degree
  • Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery and/or other relevant subspecialty associations
  • Specialist breast surgery qualification
  • Experience in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery
  • Recent experience in breast surgery
  • Experience in clinical governance
  • Evidence of research and publications
Aptitudes and skills
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Appropriate career progression consistent with personal circumstances and level of application. Evidence of CPD.
  • Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
  • Experience in clinical governance
  • The ability to make significant contributions and developments to established services
