Job Overview
The critical care unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest general adult critical care unit in the region, providing care for 33 commissioned beds (L3: 17 beds, L2: 16 beds, with 5 additional L1.5 surgical beds). The unit handles over 1600 emergency admissions and a large number of elective surgical admissions, managed by 19 critical care consultants. Bed occupancy usually exceeds 85%.
Haemodialysis and haemofiltration are performed on approximately 15% of our patients. The unit treats severe respiratory failure with regular use of proning and has access to transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography for haemodynamic monitoring. Accredited FICE, TOE and CUSIC mentors and supervisors support our clinical team. The unit manages critically ill patients with infectious diseases, acute pancreatitis, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and vasculitis.
Duties of the Job
8.5 PA for direct clinical care (including on‑call cover) is offered, with the possibility of splitting clinical work with another speciality (up to 2.5 PA sessions). 1.5 PA for supporting professional activities (SPAs) are offered at appointment, with additional sessions for lead roles. The successful applicant will join a team of nineteen consultants on a weekly rota, providing consistent coverage. Daily, three consultants cover the unit with distinct shifts, and there is additional on‑call cover from 19:30 to 08:00.
Weekend frequency is 1 in 4. Out‑reach consultants support the CCOT team and plan elective theatre activity.

Person Specification QualificationEssential criteria
- MB ChB or equivalent
- FRCA, MCEM, MRCP or equivalent
- Full registration with GMC
- FFICM or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Additional post‑graduate qualification
Essential criteria
- On the Specialist Register with the GMC
- CCT in Intensive Care or equivalent, or expected to attain one within 6 months of interview date
- Completion of 12 months advanced training in Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Post CCT experience in Intensive Care Medicine
Essential criteria
- Evidence of knowledge and practical skills for adult intensive care medicine
Essential criteria
- Involvement in audit and QI projects within the department
Desirable criteria
- Leading system or quality improvement
- Published research

- FUSIC accreditation for ECHO and lung ultrasound

- Training and experience in management roles
