Position OverviewThe Medical Director provides direct patient care and oversight for all medical services within our outpatient SUD and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. This role ensures safe and effective medical care aligned with Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) Certification Standards, 9 CSR 30 regulations, Missouri Prescription Data Monitoring Program (PDMP) requirements, and Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMHSA) guidelines.
The Medical Director serves as a senior clinical leader and works in partnership with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) as a peer collaborator
. While maintaining distinct but complementary roles, the Medical Director reports directly to the Executive Director and provides leadership related to medical standards of care, safe prescribing, clinical compliance, and quality improvement initiatives.
This position is structured with an approximately 75% clinical and 25% administrative time allocation and plays a key role in program development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities Schedule Expectations- Minimum on-site presence of two (2) days per week, totaling at least sixteen (16) hours per week at ARCA practice locations
- Additional clinical or administrative work may be completed on-site or remotely based on program needs and patient care demands
- Provide on-site supervision for all medical services, including prescribing and managing buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other FDA-approved SUD medications
- Deliver direct patient care, including medication management and treatment of co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions
- Conduct initial medical evaluations, ongoing assessments, and treatment plan reviews in accordance with American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria and Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) standards
- Create, implement, and monitor clinical protocols, standing orders, safe-prescribing practices, and controlled substance monitoring in partnership with the CMO
- Participate in collaborative practice agreements with nurse practitioners and physician associates
- Collaborate with therapists, nursing staff, case managers, and administrative leadership to support integrated, high-quality care
- Provide consultation, supervision, and support to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician associates, and clinical staff
- Participate in quality improvement activities, chart audits, DMH-required reporting, incident review, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards development as requested
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluation of medical staff
- Support workforce development through training, mentorship, and adherence to organizational human resource policies
- Ensure compliance with Missouri DMH (9 CSR 30), Missouri PDMP, and SAMHSA regulations
- Active, unrestricted Missouri physician license
- Current unrestricted registrations with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD)
- Board certification in primary specialty and board certification or board eligibility in Addiction Medicine (with intent to become board certified in Addiction Medicine)
- Experience in outpatient SUD and mental health treatment and integrated care settings
- Working knowledge of Missouri DMH regulations (9 CSR 30), PDMP, and MAT standards
- Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office Suite
