As a Planner, you’ll advance active transportation projects—biking, walking, and micromobility—across Michigan and beyond, collaborating with national leaders in the field. Our work includes multimodal corridor studies, Active Transportation and Vision Zero plans, Safe Routes to School, trails and greenways, way finding, and Complete Streets initiatives, all grounded in equity.

Working within interdisciplinary teams, you’ll apply strong urban design and technical skills to bring project visions to life—developing concept plans, streetscape ideas, 2D/3D visuals, mapping and graphics, and supporting design documentation. You’ll also contribute through data analysis, community engagement, field work, plan writing, and stakeholder coordination to create safer, more vibrant public spaces.

This position works a hybrid schedule in Ann Arbor that requires occasional in person workdays with the Michigan team and in person attendance at client meetings and public engagement activities as needed. Toole Design will provide employees with the necessary equipment to work from home.

We are targeting a salary range of $59,000 to $67,000 for this position.

• Relevant background: A bachelor’s or master’s degree or 4+ years experience in planning, urban design, or a related field
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite (Bonus: graphic production in 2D/3D using Sketch Up/V-Ray/Rhino or Lumion, or willingness to learn)
• Proficiency in mapping and cartography software (ArcGIS, QGIS)
• Hands-on academic or practical experience in planning
• Strong visual communication skills, including diagramming, mapping, and design storytelling (Bonus: hand or digital sketching)
• Transportation & engagement skills:
  Experience with multimodal transportation, public engagement, or communications
• Project & communication skills:
  Able to manage tasks independently, collaborate on teams, and clearly communicate technical ideas in writing
