Senior Heritage & Townscape Consultant – Node

Join Node
, a team of urban designers, landscape architects and heritage consultants, to support the delivery of heritage and townscape services.

Salary: £37,000 – £45,000 (subject to experience). Full‑time, flexible working.

Location:

Birmingham City Centre (grade II listed offices) with periodic site visits across the UK, mainly the Midlands.

Responsibilities
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver core heritage products, including:
    • Assessment of significance of heritage assets and the contribution of setting;
    • Heritage impact assessment and/or HTVIA;
    • Historic building advice and recording;
    • Consultancy to local authorities on planning permission and listed building consent, and local plan assessment and policy‑making.
  • Operate autonomously, producing outputs to a consistent standard of excellence.
  • Build and sustain commercial relationships with clients and partners; existing stakeholder connections are highly desirable.
Requirements – Experience
  • Qualified historic‑environment professional with a minimum of five years’ experience and a demonstrable track record in at least one core heritage product (see above).
  • Robust knowledge of the English planning system relating to heritage and an understanding of related matters (e.g. local plan making, landscapeائها, green belt).

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of providing expert advice and analysis to diverse audiences.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign in particular).
  • Desirable additional skills: GIS, archival &historical research, visual communication (hand sketching, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, photography, cartography).

  • Eager to collaborate with a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Self‑motiv moderately; able to organise and prioritise tasks independently.
  • Commercially minded with proven success in sustaining lasting client relationships.
Qualifications
  • A historic environment degree is desirable; applicants from related disciplines (planning, landscape, urban design) are welcomed if they have relevant professional experience.
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation (e.g. IHBC, RTPI) or a commitment to obtain one during employment.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive to sites inaccessible by public transport. Expenses will be covered.
