These internships are located in the Office of Communications - Jefferson Square Building, Richland County.
Program Overview
This is an in-office role and not a telecommute or remote position. Are you looking for a Summer Internship? Intern will complete a 12-week internship in the Office of Communications. Working within the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) Office of Communications, this position will assist in the development and dissemination of material in support of the agency’s communications strategy.
Responsibilities
This position produces writing, editing and additional public relations support for activities, programs and initiatives. The position works in tandem with team members to plan and execute communication initiatives.
- Researching and developing social media content
- Drafting articles for internal and external agency newsletters
- Editing and proofreading communications materials
- Assisting with maintaining digital and website content
- Supporting team members with various communication needs
Eligibility & Qualifications
Intern applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age on or before the first day of the internship, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Qualified candidates must be enrolled in an accredited institution, majoring in journalism, media, digital communications, mass communications, marketing or a related field.
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four-year institution).
- Graduated from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college, community college, or university (two-to-four-year institution) no more than two years before the first day of the internship.
- Not a previous intern.

Must be available to work a minimum of fifteen (15) hours per week during the semester.
- Knowledge of grammar, composition and AP style
- Ability to gather, organize and present oral and written information in a clear, concise and accurate manner
- Knowledge of journalistic principles and practices
- Ability to edit various communications materials
- Ability to meet tight deadlines
- Proficient in MS Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite
- Graphic Design
- Must be able to handle multiple assignments and meet assigned deadlines. Demonstrate command of journalistic principles, proper grammar and spelling, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
