Part-time Journalist/Community News Contributor

We are currently accepting applications for 2 part-time journalists (10-12 hours per week, $24/hour) to work with our local news team to continue our commitment to hyper‑local reporting in the Tantramar region. Experience is not necessary, but we expect you to have a deep commitment to community broadcasting and the professionalism to work with a team, and to develop and deliver your work in a timely manner.

These positions are open to Mount Allison students as well as community members. You will be expected to attend weekly meetings with the Mentor/Editor and other journalists and to work independently to complete the weekly stories. Audio experience is also not necessary, but familiarity with technology and digital media management would be considered a valuable asset.

As a journalist for CHMA, you will work to generate news stories on issues and activities that arise from local institutions and governments within the North Cumberland and Westmorland counties, including issues relating to local governments and institutions, Indigenous groups, climate change, poverty and economic development as well as cultural activities such as art galleries, theatre groups, music festivals and other special interests groups.

We’re open to remote/work from home accommodations with interactions and engagement through our Slack group.

  • Create original civic journalism and news that meets the diverse needs of the underserved communities of Westmoreland and Cumberland counties, NB & NS.
  • Produce local content/original news articles/programs/interviews each week and compiling/writing news for reading on‑air and contribute to CHMA’s Community News Program. Produced content to be promoted on social media and submitted to the  in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with our other reporters to provide continuity of content.
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings with the Community Mentor/Editor and report on progress.
